What Makes an Acronym Catch On?
The acronyms that survive are the ones that are easier to say than the full phrase. "Scuba" beats "Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus" every time — which is why the 1952 coinage fully replaced its source phrase. The same pressure turned "Radio Detection and Ranging" (1940) and "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation" (1957) into ordinary lowercase words; many English speakers no longer realize laser and radar were ever acronyms at all.
New terms follow the same path, faster. SOS entered international service in 1906; OMG was first recorded in a 1917 letter to Winston Churchill, decades before texting existed; WiFi dates to 1999, FOMO to 2004, and YOLO was popularized in 2011. Of the 299 examples above, roughly a third are pronounced as words — the rest are spelled out letter by letter.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are some common acronym examples?
+
SCUBA (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus), RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging), and LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) are the classic examples — initials that became words pronounced on their own. Everyday initialisms like ATM, HTML, and FAQ work the same way but are spelled out letter by letter.
What is the difference between an acronym and an initialism?
+
Both are built from the first letters of a phrase. If you pronounce the result as a word, it is an acronym — SCUBA, RADAR, YOLO. If you spell the letters out, it is an initialism — HTML, ATM, CEO. "Acronym" is the word most people use for both, which is fine in everyday writing.
Is LOL an acronym or an initialism?
+
Technically an initialism — most people say "el-oh-el," spelling the letters. Some people pronounce it "lawl," which would make it an acronym. Either way it has been part of internet language since the 1980s Usenet era.
What is the oldest acronym still in use?
+
SOS went into international service in 1906 as a distress signal chosen for its unmistakable Morse pattern (... --- ...) — it never officially stood for anything. AM and PM are far older still: they abbreviate the Latin phrases ante meridiem and post meridiem. Among English word-acronyms, the early-20th-century wave gave us many terms that survive today.
Are new acronyms still being invented?
+
Constantly. WiFi dates to 1999, CAPTCHA to 2003, FOMO to 2004, and YOLO was popularized in 2011. The internet accelerates the cycle: a chat abbreviation can go from niche forum slang to the dictionary in under a decade.
How do I make my own acronym?
+
Two directions: start with a phrase and compress it into initials with the abbreviation generator, or start with a word you like and expand it into a phrase with the backronym generator. For names specifically, the name acronym generator builds a motto from the letters of any name.
