What Is a Backronym?

A backronym (back + acronym) runs the normal naming process in reverse. Instead of compressing a phrase into initials, you start with a word you like and invent a phrase whose words begin with each of its letters — so the word itself becomes the acronym of your phrase.

Backronyms are everywhere: motivational posters (TEAM, FEAR), tech standards (POSIX), and even folk etymologies — many famous "word origins" like SOS meaning "Save Our Ship" are actually backronyms invented after the fact. The word itself is young: "backronym" was coined in 1983, while the SMART goals framework dates to 1981 and POSIX to 1985.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a backronym?

+

A backronym is a phrase invented to fit an existing word, so each letter of the word becomes the initial of a word in the phrase. TEAM → Together Everyone Achieves More is the classic example. It works backwards from a normal acronym: word first, phrase second.

Is GOLF really short for "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden"?

+

No — that is a backronym, and a false one. Golf comes from the old Scots word "gouf". The "Gentlemen Only" expansion was invented later as a joke. Many famous "word origins" (SOS as "Save Our Ship", NEWS as "Notable Events Weather and Sports") are actually backronyms made up after the fact.

What are some famous backronym examples?

+

TEAM → Together Everyone Achieves More, SMART → Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound, FEAR → False Evidence Appearing Real, and POSIX → Portable Operating System Interface for Unix, coined by Richard Stallman.
